KIMBERLY AKIMBO
KIMBERLY AKIMBO is by the Pulitzer-Prize winning author of "Rabbit Hole," and is both a humorous black comedy and a profound and poignant study of how people deal with the cards that life deals them. In 2003, the New York Times called it "the comedy of the year."

"Kimberly Akimbo" tells the story of a teenage girl with a rare medical condition that causes her body to age four and a half times faster than normal, so that when she is 16, she appears to be 70. She is surrounded by outrageously quirky characters and situations, including a pregnant, hypochondriac mother who wants a "normal" child, a rarely sober but loving father who dreams of running with the bulls at Pamplona, an ex-con scam-artist aunt who lives in the library under a pile of beanbag chairs, and the possibility of first love with her socially-challenged but sweet classmate Jeff, who works at Zippy Burger and whose favorite pastimes are writing anagrams and playing Dungeons and Dragons. In spite of, or perhaps because of, the craziness, Kimberly awakens to possibilities she had never dreamed of. She not only learns the importance of living each moment of each day to the fullest, but finds the courage and the power to make the choices that will allow her to do exactly that, no matter what the consequences.

KIMBERLY AKIMBO is directed by MCT veteran, Kathie Kratochvil, who most recently directed MCT's wildly successful production of "The Rocky Horror Show," and stars Kulani Kamaha'o in the title role. Ms. Kamaha'o is well known throughout the Santa Cruz area for her work as a musician, musical director and performing arts instructor. Adding to both the insanity and the poignancy, Ms. Kamaha'o's real-life daughter, Kulia Blick, who recently starred as Magenta in "The Rocky Horror Show," plays Kimberly's mother. The cast also includes Michael LaMere who was featured recently in MCT's "I Hate Hamlet," "Our Town," and "Miracle on 34th Street," Cody Esser, a student at Coast Redwoods Charter, and Rhea Williams, returning to MCT after a long absence.

KIMBERLY AKIMBO contains strong adult language and is intended for mature audiences.
