Headline Concerts-
Réalta March 22, 2019, 8 pm. Evanston Roundhouse. The Band Réalta take a lively, exciting and respectful approach to Irish traditional music. Reared on a staple diet of The Bothy Band, Planxty and other such classics, this Belfast based band captures the timeless aspects of the tradition and presents it in its raw form fresh and beautiful Or as one reviewer put it, Réalta carry on the Bothy Band tradition of taking tunes by the scruff of the neck and firing excitement through them like hot flames! Having toured Germany, Switzerland and Greece alongside traditional music legends Altan, and won the prestigious Danny Kyle Award at Celtic Connections Festival, these young musicians have firmly established themselves on the international Irish music scene. Their music has taken them throughout Europe and on to New York, India and South Korea. Grab your dancing shoes and find out why as they perform a stirring mix of tunes on uilleann pipes, whistles, flute, guitar, piano, double bass, bouzouki, banjo and bodhrán. Réalta are now touring to promote the release of their second album Clear Skies (2016)
Ímar March 23,2019, 6 pm. Evanston Roundhouse. There are many reasons to be excited about new Glasgow-based five-piece Ímar not least a line-up featuring current and former members of Mànran, RURA, Talisk, Barrule, Cara, Mabon and The Lowground, whose collectively crammed trophy-cabinet includes a BBC Young Folk Award and several All-Britain/All-Ireland titles. By far the best and biggest reason, however, is how excited the band are themselves. All five of them originally met as teenagers through Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, the Irish traditional music network that tutors budding players throughout the British Isles and beyond, and stages the annual schedule of Fleadh competitions.
The High Kings March 23, 2019, 6 pm. Evanston Roundhouse. Essentially the male version of Celtic Woman, the High Kings are a mass-marketed contemporary Celtic quartet under the musical direction of David Downes of Riverdance fame. Debuted in 2008, the High Kings are a supergroup comprised of Irish natives Finbarr Clancy (born in Carrick-an-Suir, County Tipperary; formerly of the Clancy Brothers), Martin Furey (born in Dunmore East, County Waterford; formerly of the group Bohinta), Brian Dunphy (born in Dublin; formerly a cast member of Riverdance), and Darren Holden (born in County Kilkenny; formerly a cast member of Riverdance, among other Broadway productions, and a successful solo artist as well). Their debut album, The High Kings, sold very well in the United States for world music (peaking at number 150 on the Billboard Top 200 albums chart and number two on the world music albums chart), thanks in significant part to a PBS television special (also released on DVD) broadcast nationally in commemoration of the St. Patrick's Day holiday. The High Kings subsequently toured their homeland.
