Sugar & the Mint
Once again Monterey Court is thrilled to bring this awesome young band back to our stage! A vibrant, progressive indie-folk and bluegrass band brings new energy and original material to traditional american music.
Sugar and the Mint has shared the bill with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Emmylou Harris, Punch Brothers, Tommy Emmanuel, Jerry Douglas, I'm With Her, Steep Canyon Rangers, and the Sam Bush Band, while performing at the West's best festivals: Telluride Bluegrass Festival (2018), Ogden Music Festival (2017, 2018) Pagosa Folk and Bluegrass Festival (2018), Rapidgrass Festival (2018), Pickin' in the Pines Acoustic Music Festival (2017), and many more.

In addition to festival appearances, Sugar and the Mint draws large crowds at ticketed theater shows, with a history of Sold Out events. Performances highlight the band's own work: innovative, original songs found on Sugar and the Mint's albums, Just Past Midnight and Grape Flavored. The band's musical repertoire spans many genres. Early on, the band put its own spin on songs from blues legend Robert Johnson, the father of bluegrass Bill Monroe, folk music icons The Kingston Trio, and rock & roll's Allman Brothers. Today, unique arrangements of 20th century favorites still make it to the set list for live shows.

Just Past Midnight (2018) showcases the group's fresh musical perspective and artistry. The record features a bevy of spirited originals, including "How Far," a tale of toxic love (music video available on YouTube); the tender folk ballad "Overland Drive;' 'Thumper," a toe-tapping bluegrass instrumental; and the jazz-inspired "on My Mind." The hopeful and ardent love song "Where Do We Go?" gives rise to the album title, Just Past Midnight. From the gospel-inspired "Dry Land" to the male/female duet in "Run Away," the album is powered by stand-alone lyrics and strong melodies. In the midst of an album full of original material, Sugar and the Mint includes a purposeful, acoustic re-imagining of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run."

Sugar and the Mint's first album, Grape Flavored (2017), demonstrates Sugar and the Mint's vocal and string prowess. Lovely harmonies permeate all lyrical pieces, particularly in "Greenback Dollar," "Come On In My Kitchen," and the original "Welcome Home." Other originals, instrumental "Elkhorn Reel" and the vocal ditty "Ten Years From Today,"look back to the band's beginnings with energetic vibrato. The title instrumental, "Grape Flavored," a triple-fiddle original brings live audiences out of their seats. "Ain't No Grave," a soulful rendition of an old gospel favorite, re-calibrates with the band's captivating arrangement, and the piece has become one of Sugar and the Mint's signature songs as well as well as the band's first music video.

Winner of the prestigious Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Contest in June 2017, Sugar and the Mint hails from Prescott, Arizona. The acoustic string quartet consists of Matt Tatum Haynes (mandolin, vocals), Johan Glidden (lead vocals, guitar, violin), Glory Glidden (violin, vocals) and Keenan Hammack (guitar, vocals). (Former members are Kiva Rain Keith  and Jason Howard.)
