Memories of My Late Father: Ricardo Montalban
This course will contain personal reflections on the life and acting career of the late Ricardo Montalban from the entertainer's youngest son, Victor (Vic). The presentation includes a twenty-minute video with clips that capture highlights of Ricardo's 70 years in movies and on television. The video is followed by Vic's anecdotes and insights both from a personal and professional perspective.
Although father and son had a pretty typical relationship, living in the shadows of a famous person posed some challenges for the younger Montalban. Vic will share those, plus many fond memories, while he covers details of his father's acting career from the early years when he was under contract at MGM, to more recent milestones such as "Star Trek 2 - The Wrath of Khan," the Chrysler Cordoba ads, "Fantasy Island" and the "Spy Kids" films.
A universally liked and respected actor from a humble beginning in Mexico, Ricardo Montalban was dedicated to his craft. He was the consummate optimist, in many ways a perfectionist, a devout Catholic, enjoyed a 64-year marriage to his only wife Georgiana, spoke five languages and enjoyed woodworking and telling jokes.
Ricardo, who lived to the advanced age of 88, passed away peacefully at home on January 14, 2009.
Vic Montalban, age 60, is the youngest of four children of Ricardo Montalban. He obtained a BA in English from Loyola-Marymount University of Los Angeles. He has worked in corporate public relations, video production and television reporting. Currently serving on the board of directors of the Ricardo Montalban Foundation, Vic is divorced with two college-age children and resides in South County.
Some of his diverse accomplishments include serving as a national spokesperson for AT&T and winning a Los Angeles Area Emmy Award. He also conducted on-camera interviews with celebrities such as William Shatner, Kurt Russell, Burt Reynolds, Dolly Parton, Robert Lamm (of the singing group Chicago), Steven Spielberg and Elton John, among others.
Having worked as an entertainment reporter, Vic maintains an interest in Hollywood history. He is an avid viewer of Turner Classic Movies (TCM) and has a lifelong interest in films from Hollywood's "Golden Age."
