Backyard is borne out of our love of food, friends and the community that raised us. Growing up in the Bay has given us so much access to diversity, culture, civic engagement and creativity. We want to show our appreciation by raising funds for people and organizations that make all that possible while doing what we do best - communing over delicious food with fam and friends, old and new.
THE BACKGROUND:
Last year, we decided to turn our casual weekly potlucks into something a little bigger and more intentional. We began a series of seasonal dinner parties in our yard for friends, family, neighbors, and strangers to fundraise for local nonprofits doing important work in the community. We choose an organization whose work we admire for its efforts to create sustainable movements and a more equitable society in the changing East Bay. One important goal for these events is to offer people a chance to learn about and feel inspired by critical work happening in their own neighborhoods, to engage in conversations about those issues in a more intimate setting, and to feel hope during a difficult political time.
THE ORGANIZATION:
For our 4th Backyard event we are so excited to be partnering with Guardian Gym in Oakland.
The martial arts gym serves people of all ages, but our fundraiser will be going specifically towards expanding their amazing youth program. They currently train over 200 kids and teens (ages 10-18) for FREE, allowing young people from all over the Bay Area to exercise, join a community and learn new skills and discipline regardless of income. Guardian also provides kids with mentors who are leading Oakland community members as well as martial arts clothing and supplies and meals for those who are in need.
Guardian started its youth program in 2016, and due to the gym's success, they are planning to expand to a second location with the goal of ultimately serving up to 1,000 children from all over the Bay. Think of what an impact that will have! Check out the super cool plans for the new gym (which will include a classroom for tutoring and an outdoor grill and picnic area in addition to the gym facilities!) here:

It is so important to have fulfilling after-school programs Everyone can access, especially if its a program as comprehensive as Guardian's offering physical training and activity, tutoring, mentorship, nutrition and a sense of community. Watch this great little video to understand why:
