Commercially Sexually Exploited Children in SLO County -- Tracy Schiro

While California ranks among the top four states for human trafficking, the Central Coast is situated on the human trafficking corridor. Why is this area a haven for human trafficking? Where on the Central Coast is it taking place and in what forms? How is it being hidden?

What are the profiles of the traffickers and their relationships with those who are trafficked? How are they recruited? What are the profiles of the victims? What are their ages? What are the risks to these youth? Surprisingly, many are American children. Their life expectancy is only 7 years after their first encounter.

Do they stay in the area or are they moved through the area? How are they marketed? How do the authorities discover these victims? What care is available for the survivors?

How is law enforcement combating crime? What services are available through Social Services? How is the county and State collaborating?

What are the signs of human trafficking? How can we identify it? What can we do?

Tracy Schiro, Assitant Director for the San Luis Obispo County Department of Social Services., will cover all this an more during the class. She was also a member of the H.E.A.T Institute Blue Ribbon Commison on Human Trafficking and has trained at the local, state and national level on topics related to child welfare.
