On Nov. 1, 1872, famed women's rights activist Susan B. Anthony strode boldly into a barbershop that doubled as a poll in her hometown of Rochester, N.Y., and announced that she wished to register to vote. The 1872 presidential election was four days hence. She knew, of course, that state law limited voting to males. Certain she would be turned away by the election inspectors, she planned to appeal her case to the U.S. Supreme Court. A legal victory would open voting to women from coast to coast. But she was thwarted at every turn. To Anthony's surprise and dismay, the inspectors allowed her first to register and then to vote. Afterward, a Federal marshal knocked on her door. Soon she and the three inspectors were under arrest. Not at all what she had strategized. Come and hear more about her activism and the results of the trial at the staged reading of this new play.

"LETTERS TO AUNT HATTIE" Written and Directed by Gigi McGraw. Featuring Ciera Gardner. This one-woman reading is a preview of our 2019 touring play about African American Philadelphia civil rights activist, Harriet Forten Purvis (Hattie) (1810-1875). It is based on correspondence between Harriet and her niece Charlotte.
When Charlotte expresses worries about her future to her Aunt Hattie, she learns about the struggles and accomplishments of her aunt and other women in her family. Come hear about Harriet's work in the creation of The Philadelphia Female Anti-Slavery Society, the 1838 Women's Anti-Slavery Convention in Philadelphia, her membership in the National Woman Suffrage Association and her friendship with Susan B. Anthony and Lucretia Mott. Hear, too, how Harriet and her husband Robert Purvis also worked with Octavius Catto to desegregate Philadelphia trolley cars.
