The Last Hurrah!

Back in 1999, I was invited to conduct the Lake Union Civic Orchestra for a season during their music director's leave of absence. At that stage of my career, I had been conducting professional orchestras and was somewhat hesitant about a year-long commitment with an amateur ensemble. All it took was a single meeting with LUCO's leaders to be completely smitten by their genuine passion for music, intelligence, enthusiasm, and ambition. The very first concerts we shared sealed the deal, making it clear that we were on the same musical page. It was my good fortune that when LUCO's director decided not to return, I was offered the job, and so began one fo the most fulfilling creative journeys of my life. My first challenge to LUCO was to push the ensemble beyond its comfort zone while preserving its wonderful spirit of community. Year after year, I kept pushing the boundaries of LUCO's musicianship, selecting increasingly ambitious repertoire which had been out of reach but very much coveted. Mahler symphonies, the pinnacle of the genre, became accessible through the deep commitment and resolve of our members, each of whom were volunteering their precious time. Towering masterpieces by Debussy, Shostakovich, Stravinsky, and Bartok provided us with countless memorable hours of deeply rewarding creativity. Some of the region's finest soloists, getting wind of LUCO's growing reputation as one of the best and most welcoming ensembles of its kind in the Northwest, shared the stage with us time and again.

With this 2018-2019 season, I conclude a grand adventure for which I am deeply grateful. On it you will find masterpieces that are close to my heart and have stood as milestones in LUCO's trajectory. Joining us on stage one last time as soloists are friends with whom I have shared many memorable creative partnerships. Our April concert marks the return to our Town Hall home following extensive renovations that bring this landmark building to 21st-century standards. For our grand finale in June, I will have the great pleasure of passing the baton to our Music Director Designate Nikolas Caoile, who will conduct the opener on this very momentous occasion. Nikolas is a superlative musician and leader, as well as a gentleman, and I am most confident that he will take LUCO to new heights for many years to come.

I am deeply grateful to all the terrific individuals who have taken part in LUCO's grand adventure. These fine musicians, board directors, and volunteers have enriched the lives of many, including my own. Thank you, LUCO, for a great ride! Once again, and for the last time, I invite you, our audience, to partake in our musical journey and share in the artistry, passion, and enthusiasm that make LUCO such a joy.

To twenty wonderful years. Cheers!

- Christophe
