Ian Coury Trio
The 5th Berkeley Festival of Choro is proud to present this special concert featuring a rising start from Brazil at the Sound Room.  Ian Coury is the new face of choro in Brazil and will delight you with his playing.

The mandolin player Ian Coury was born in Brasilia, the Capital of Brazil. When he was 8 years old, he started playing the instrument and chose Choro as his musical genre. His inspirations came from mandolinists such as Jacob do Bandolim, Hamilton de Holanda and Armandinho Macedo.  In addition, with only 14 years old, Ian is already recognized by the Sciences, Arts, History and Literature Brazilian Academy as a Highlighted musician. Also, he has in his curriculum participations in renowned programs such as Global Strings Intensive Course (2015) and Summer Five Week (2016), both organized by Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA.

In his musical path as a solo mandolinist, Ian realized 3 big shows at the famous Club of Choro in Brasilia, where he was successful based on the audience and critics opinions.  His admirers say that his talent is undeniable.

NANDO DUARTE, a Rio de Janeiro native, started his musical career at a young age playing electric guitar on tour with pop bands in Brazil. Moving to the seven-string acoustic guitar he became one of the catalysts of Brazils popular music re-awakening with Dino 7 cordas as his mentor and Luiz Otávio Braga, Hélio Delmiro among others as his professors.

His career as a seven-string guitarist led him to play, record, and/or produce some of the biggest names in Brazilian music, including Elza Soares, Gal Costa, Zélia Duncan, João Bosco, Nicolas Krassik, Yamandú Costa, Martnália, Moska, Maria Gadú, Adriana Calcanhoto, Walter Alfaiate, Zeca Pagodinho, Soraya Ravenle, Ney Matogrosso, Moyses Marques, Diogo Nogueira, among others.

An acclaimed percussionist, performer, educator, recording artist and specialist in both Brazilian and Afro Cuban percussion, BRIAN RICE has performed and/or recorded with Danilo Brito, Dudu Maia, Alessandro Penezzi, Mike Marshall, Almir Côrtes, Rogerio Souza, Jovino Santos Neto, Spok, Claudia Villela and Jorge Alabe among others and his playing graces over 70 recordings.  In April 2017 Brian performed at the Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center and the Savannah Music Festival with the Danilo Brito Quintet.  Brian is the co-founder and artistic director of the Berkeley Festival of Choro and teaches Samba Bateria, and the Afro-Cuban Ensembles at UC Davis and Brazilian percussion at the California Jazz Conservatory.
