Teatrero.com: A Mapping of Contemporary Spanish Theater by Julio Vélez Sainz
Teatrero.com: A Mapping of Contemporary Spanish Theater by Julio Vélez Sainz Thursday, September 27, 6 pm Instituto Cervantes Library 31 West Chicago Chicago., IL 60640 Free and open to the public. In Spanish and English
LET US NOT BE FOOLED, in spite of the economic crisis, in spite of the occasional institutional interest, contemporary Spanish theater is in good shape. In the following meeting/tal/workshop, Julio Vélez, director of the Complutense Institute for Theater Studies analyzes the artistic, social and economic reality of Spanish theater. He utilizes a database that chronicles the last theatrical years. Among other currents, the database points to interest that notions of identity and marginality have sparked within younger authors, the prëeminence of the stage director over author and actors, the persistence and combination of European and Latin American topics (metatheater, documentary theater, post-dramatic theatre, poor theater, political theater) combined with performance and the resilient Early Modern Classics.
Julio Vélez Sainz (Ph.D. University of Chicago, 2002; Ph.D. Universidad de Salamanca, 2008) is Profesor Titular at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and director of the Complutense Institute for Theater Studies. He has published five monographs in Spanish and English, six critical editions and a dictionary. He has edited ten volumes of critical studies and authored over 100 articles in academic journals. He blogs on the Huffington Post (Spain) on theatre and cultural matters.
