A hundred years ago, California men were fighting on the battlefields along the Western Front in Europe and in Russia.

Their stories and those of the women nurses who cared for the wounded and dying have been forgotten until now. World War 1 (1914 1918) defined the rest of the history of the twentieth century. The Great War, as it was then called, set the stage for the emergence of the United States as a world power.

In California, the war redefined the way people related to each other and to the government. Never before had so many Californians taken such a dynamic part in community, state, national and international affairs.

In this presentation we will learn some of the stories of the brave men and women who served over seas. You will hear about the ways that daily life changed for everyone on the home front factory and farm workers, housewives and children, pacifists and politicians. We will explore how an entire state, now the most influential in the nation -- with immediate global recognition -- dealt with the demands of war, including civil liberties restrictions and a deadly influenza pandemic.

In a democratic society, the governments decision to go to war raises important questions that are timeless. We will discuss and try to answer some of these questions.

Diane M. T. North (PhD, History, University of California, Davis), taught at San Francisco State University and now teaches for the University of Maryland University College which honored her recently with the Stanley J. Drazek Teaching Excellence Award. She is the author of California at War: The State and the People during World War I (2018), an earlier book on the American Southwest, and articles on civil liberties and the law, and teaching history
