August 25: Gina Sobel with Uasuf Gueye
We are thrilled to welcome Gina Sobel and Uasuf Gueye - this one will be phenomenal!
Doors open as always at 6:30 for a vegetarian feast (our gift to you - 100% of ticket proceeds go to the musicians). Music starts at 7:30.  Leave your shoes at the door; BYOB, and please text 202 270-5048 in advance if you're game to help cook or clean up. It's always fun.

About Gina: the future of jazz can be heard in Gina Sobel's music. She's known for her improvising prowess on flute, and is an accomplished vocalist, saxophonist and composer. Her music features keen lyrics and expansive melodies, and brings together elements of funk, modal jams and found sounds. Gina is a consummate bandleader and an eager collaborator, all in the service of making good music.

Gina plays with musicians in genres ranging from hip hop to bluegrass. She released a solo album called Worlds Getting Loud in 2016, which acts as an internal travelogue, filled out with lush layers of stratocaster and voice. Gina is currently working on an album with her newest project, a live-composed funk collective called Choose Your Own Adventure, which builds tight, catchy tunes from the drums up.
Gina tours regularly around the United States. She is currently a Strathmore Artist in Residence pursuing her original compositions, and part of the Virginia Heritage Foundations apprenticeship program, studying with Susan Gaeta.

About Uasuf: Born in Washington, DC, Uasuf Gueye belongs to a family of Nguewel/Diali, or oral historians and musicians. He began his study and performance of Manding and Wolof music at a very young age. Uasuf is a dynamic djembe and dundun drummer as well as a skilled instrument craftsman. He also plays the 21-key bala, which he learned first with his teacher, Cheick Hamala Diabate and other master artists of the Manding tradition of West Africa. Uasuf has dedicated his life to the task of becoming an ambassador of African culture to the world. The catalyst for such a responsibility is the passion he has for reconnecting those of the African Diaspora to one another. His repertoire ranges from traditional songs from the 13th century to contemporary original compositions incorporating blues and jazz riffs.
Uasuf has studied in Senegal, West Africa, as well as the United States with master musicians and craftsmen including Medoune Yacine Gueye, Baile Mcknight, Famoro Dioubate, Mahiri F. Keita, and Amadou Kouyate. He has also acted as a teachers assistant to Amadou Kouyate at the University of Maryland and Montgomery College.
