A Tribute to the Latin American New Song
Tito Amaya and Grupo Latitudes honor the Latin American New Song and its influences throughout the Latin American continent. New Song, canto nuevo, is the Latin American music of
political resistance. Beautiful melodies and powerful lyrics
highlight crucial political and social issues.

Individuals such as Violeta Parra and Victor Jara of Chile as well as the Argentine Atahualpa Yupanqui collected and recorded folk and indigenous tunes and popularized them. The songs soon evolved into blatant political statements, and by the mid 1960s the music embodied powerful lyrics that discussed crucial political and social issues. As Victor Jara said, "there is no revolution without songs!"

The program will include songs from Chile, Argentina, and other countries in the Americas. Nueva canción features beautiful melodies and socially committed lyrics. The music remembers  historical injustices, speaks of contemporary issues, and looks to the future. All songs will be in Spanish, with a short English introduction.

Tito Amaya and Grupo Latitudes travel from the Salvadorian rock of Amayas birthplace to the Andean mountains of Peru, Bolivia and beyond for their unique musical repertoire. The Andean folk tradition blends chants and rhythms from the pre-Hispanic indigenous communities of the Inca Empire, such as the Quechua and Aymara, along with Spanish string instruments like the guitar. There was a flowering of this type of music throughout the Latin American continent in the 1960s and 1970s, as both hope and repression gripped the region. Grupo Latitudes highlights this musical legacy. They celebrate and honor nueva cancion, the beautiful melodies with socially committed lyrics associated with Victor Jara, Violeta Parra and Mercedes Sosa. This genre is marked most prominently by its use of the guitar, bombo, charango, siku, and quena and other unique instruments. Join us as we celebrate Latin America in Portland.
