Michael Chandler: Back to Basics: Using Keetmans Elementaria & Recorder the Orff Schulwerk Way
Back to the Basics: Using Keetmans Elementaria (morning session) Elementaria is Gunild Keetmans handbook on Orff Schulwerk. In it, we find specific and clear explanations of basic Schulwerk teaching including strategies for rhythmic and melodic improvisation and elemental music ensemble work. It is a perfect companion to Music for Children Volume I. Participants in this workshop will explore elemental music making in the elementary classroom using the most basic processes of Orff Schulwerk including imitation, exploration, labeling, and improvisation and explore this sequence by using and combining the Orff Schulwerk media: speech, singing, moving, body percussion, and instrument playing. Take a tour of Keetmans Elementaria and experience real world applications to using the various sections found within this primary source material. If you have access to a copy of Keetmans Elementaria, bring it along with your soprano recorder.
Recorder the Orff Schulwerk Way (afternoon session) The afternoon session will provide participants with models for inclusion of the soprano recorder into the Orff Schulwerk classroom. Playing the recorder offers elementary students opportunities to develop music literacy and aural skills while also developing creativity through improvisation. Participants in this session will experience a series of sequential recorder pedagogy lessons that move from playing by ear to improvisation and finally to music literacy. Each lesson includes possibilities for incorporating interactive technology and integrates the recorder into other active music making activities. The spoken texts and songs included in this publication represent materials with lasting value that have stood the test of time and are capable of inspiring artistry in children. The lessons are also accessible to practically any general music teacher and represent active music making through performance.
