Kitsap Strong's Elected Officials Luncheon
Why Should You Attend?
Kitsap Strongs goal is simple: Defeat the largest root cause of poor life outcomes in Kitsap. What is that cause? Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). As youll see from the data presented below, ACEs are the biggest root cause of life-long health and social issues and a massive burden our community.
The purpose of this luncheon is to bring together local elected officials and the leaders of local organizations who are dedicated to working on this problem. At the luncheon, we will give you basic education about ACEs, share with you potential legislative and policy options that could help in this area, and then ask you for your ideas about how we can use legislative and policy work to defeat ACEs.
What is Kitsap Strong?
Kitsap Strong is a collective impact initiative that consists of over 70 partner organizations participating in one or more of our 5 different networks, working towards a shared goal: Improving the well-being and educational attainment of Kitsap residents, through a focus on empowerment and equity, the prevention of ACEs, and the building of resilience. Kitsap Strong brings together agencies across diverse sectors, including healthcare, criminal justice, public health, housing, behavioral health, education, philanthropy, youth development, faith leaders, and community organizers, to work collaboratively on our shared goals to help each person in our community flourish!
Some Science Showing the Impact of ACEs
Kitsap Strong is helping agency leaders and community members understand the profound association between ACEs and behavioral health challenges (78% of IV drug use, 69% of mental health issues, 67% of suicide attempts, and 65% of alcoholism associated with ACEs), criminal justice (61% of adult & approximately 80% of youth incarceration associated with ACEs), chronic disease (51% of high risk HIV, 31% smoking, 17% asthma, & 15% of insulin diabetes associated with ACEs) and financial/housing instability (20% of unemployment, 14% of failure to complete higher education, & approximately 60% of homelessness associated with ACEs).
Thankfully, research provides us with some fabulous ideas to address these health & social challenges. We invite you to join us for an engaging and interactive conversation. Come ready to learn, share ideas, and explore opportunities for action.
