A Folksong Extravaganza

Concert News:

Soli Deo Gloria presents "Folksong Extravaganza" Saturday, May 4 at 7 pm at University Presbyterian Church. Directed by Dr. Julie Carter and accompanied by pianist Jared Eben, the concert features many folksongs of love, life, and the sea!

"She's Like the Swallow" and "Early Spring" are Newfoundland songs of the sea and lost love. American songs "Sacramento Sis Joe" and "Johnny Has Gone for a Soldier" speak to the Gold Rush era and Civil War time. "Hoj, hura hoj!" is a Moravian Czech Mountain song about young folks who enjoy calling out across the mountains and anticipating the enjoyment of being with their friends in the villages after their work day (bringing in the cows) is finished. Also featured is the "Opening Chorus from 'The Bartered Bride'" by Czech composer Smetana. In this song the villagers are celebrating the consecration festival of their church and the joy of life. From Finland we bring a set of four "Sea Songs". We also visit Northeastern Brazil with a joyful arrangement of one of their most popular folk tunes, "Muié Rendêra".

Also included in the concert is a piece by local composer, Kevin Memley entitled "Silence", spirited arrangements of "Cantate Domino", and All That Hath Life & Breath Praise Ye the Lord!" by Rene Clausen and the lush "Esto Les Digo" sung in Spanish.

Soli Deo Gloria is proud to welcome to the program the Lincoln Elementary School choir, directed by SDG singer Stephanie Grogg! They will sing several selections and join SDG on a folksong.

Dr. Julie Carter is the Founder and Artistic Director of Soli Deo Gloria. She is also the Director of Worship and Music at First Presbyterian Church, Fresno, and is an accomplished soprano soloist.
