Writers Bloc presents Greg Bellow and Rabbi David Wolpe: Saul Bellow and the Holocaust
Greg Bellow, Saul Bellow's son, explores his relationship to his father and his literature, and will talk about Saul Bellow's coming to terms with the Holocaust and with Israel. Rabbi David Wolpe of Sinai Temple will lead Greg in conversation about Saul Bellow's transformative experience of the 1967 Six Day War-- a turning point in his life as a father, writer, and a Jew. This program is significant for anyone interested in Nobel Laureate Saul Bellow's contemporary Jewish American fiction.
While Bellow always dealt with Jewish identity, he avoided the subject of the Holocaust until his visit to Israel during the Six Day War. Saul Bellow was a larger-than-life writer, and had a larger-than-life complex persona. Greg Bellow adds richness and many layers to our understanding of his father, one of the great writers in American letters.
