MIDDLE OF NOWHERE
Directed by Ava DuVernay
With David Oyelowo,Emayatzy Corinealdi,Lorraine Toussaint
2012, USA, 97 minutes, rated R for language

A plaintive, slow-boiling, stirring story about a woman coming into her own. Ruby is a lonely young nurse whose husband Derek is serving time. She dutifully visits him, and moves through her life in a detached haze. Her isolation and disconnection are broken only when she spends time with her young nephew. Though she's put her life on "pause," and tries to remain inconspicuous, Ruby reveals herself as a woman to remember. 2012, USA, 97 minutes, rated R for language

Winner, Sundance Film Festival 2012, Directing Award

"This is an elegant, powerfully emotional and courageous film, worth seeing entirely on its own artistic terms, and also for what it conveys about the complexity of African-American life and the resurgence of African-American cultural expression."  Andrew O'Hehir, Salon

"A slow-motion-enhanced kiss scene, with Corinealdi in top I-don't-give-a-f strut, is a startling example of DuVernay's ability to conjure drama that at once takes place in a character's head and in a recognizable real world. It's beautifully nuanced and confidently ambiguous  and so is the movie."  Karina Longworth, The Village Voice

"A plaintive, slow-boiling, quietly soul-stirring drama about a woman coming into her own." Manohla Dargis, The New York Times

"The truth is that it is uncommon to see serious adult dramas this moving and accomplished, so attuned to real people and their complex, recognizable emotions, no matter the racial makeup of the characters involved."  Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times

"Ms. DuVernay, from start to finish in this very fine movie, works to make sure that Ruby is a woman to remember."  Manohla Dargis, The New York Times
