Age Well, Drive Smart -- Michael Poelking

This class is designed to help senior drivers tune up their driving skills, refresh their knowledge of the rules of the road, learn about normal, age-related physical changes and how to adjust to these changes.

You or your loved one can become better, safer and more alert drivers,and/or realize that you need to discuss or decide when it may be time to limit or stop driving, and understand alternatives to driving.

Senior citizen drivers represent a wide range of abilities and skills. However, some of the skills necessary for safe driving such as vision, reflexes, flexibility, and hearing may deteriorate with age. On the other hand, one of the most critical assets for safe driving is experience, and experience does not decline with age.

Based on the California Highway Patrol Age Well Drive Smart Program, this class covers elderly drivers safety topics such as:

Myths and stereotypes about elderly drivers -such as the myth that all older drivers high risk drivers.

Taking Control of Your Driving Future -the effects of visual impairments, lack of sleep and medications on elderly drivers.

You Can Be a Better Driver - adjusting the car to better fit senior drivers, how to deal with blind spots, tailgating, dangerous intersections, lane changes, left turns.

Is it Time? When is it time to give up the Keys - Adjustments such as daylight only driving, non-freeway driving, non-rush hour driving, fair weather only driving.

There Is Life After Driving -other senior transportation and mobility options such as family or friends, public transportation, Paratransit, taxi services, bicycle, walking.
