Architecture and Behavior The Work of Richard Neutra -- Paul M. Wolff
Tuesday, July 10, 2018  1:00pm - 3:00pm

United Methodist Church San Luis Obispo

$5 for LLCC members, $10 for non-members

Each day the places, spaces and objects that we encounter directly and indirectly effect our lives.  They shape our interactions, our efficiency, our perceptions, our moods.  Architecture remains a social art. It can have a profound impact on the people it affects not only at creation, but for years to come.

This course will explore the pioneering architecture of Richard Neutra (1892  1970).

Neutra was known for taking pains to ascertain the real needs of his clients, no matter the size of the job in question, rather than attempting to impose his own artistic vision on a project. Writing in Sunset Magazine in 1943, Neutra explained that the success or "livability" of a house could be measured by how much living could be enjoyed in every part of it each hour of the day. A proponent of a modern style centered on the integration of buildings with their natural surroundings, Neutra wrote and spoke extensively on architecture as a sensorium enhancing all the senses for human well-being and delight.

In our time of seamless connectivity his proposition poses an alternative to the idea of body and architecture as container-in-a-container. As an architect of environments and atmospheres Richard Neutra was an innovator. And a pioneer of what nowadays would be called environmental psychology.

During this discussion we shall explore  "responsive architecture" and how design of buildings can be facilitated to enhance our activities, even our well-being.  Well also cover the three systems that define architecture and clients, personal space and territory,
