Erin Enderlin & Kayla Ray - Concert and Songwriters Q&A
When Erin Enderlin writes a song, more is born than melody and rhyme. Women and men leap from her music, as fully formed and real as we are, all blood and sweat, living, loving, killing, and dying.
I love story songs, Enderlin says from her home in Nashville. Its amazing to me how in just three minutes, you can create a whole character who wasnt there before that you can really see and even understand.
Enderlin has taken that love of story songs and upped the ante: her new album Whiskeytown Crier puts all the sad souls shes grown so fond of singing and writing about in the same small, fictional cityWhiskeytown. She explains that the second half of the title is a nod to a newspaper and the old town criers that used to deliver the news. Over forlorn steel and haunting fiddle, the towns secrets are exposed, sometimes with a sense of foreboding that nods to the Louvin Brothers, other times with an empathetic sadness that recalls Reba singing Fancy.
Enderlin has helped listeners see through others eyes for years. She is the writer behind award-winning songs Monday Morning Church by Alan Jackson and Last Call by Lee Ann Womack, critically acclaimed You Dont Know Jack by Luke Bryan, and a host of other songs for Randy Travis, Terri Clark, Joey + Rory, Tyler Farr, Tara Thompson, Muscadine Bloodline, and more. As an artist, her 2011 eponymous debut earned praise from Billboard, American Songwriter, and others, and led to shows with Willie Nelson, Marty Stuart, Kip Moore, Terri Clark, and more.
Enderlin has also emerged as one of those artists other artists are listening to. Merle Haggard dubbed Enderlin a wonderful singer, while Miranda Lambert calls her a badass. Shes a great writer and singer, Lee Ann Womack says. Im always excited to hear her stuff.
The Conway, Arkansas-raised Enderlin wrote her first songs in fourth grade, then performed the them for her music classmates. What were the tunes about? I had one about a kid whose parents were crack addicts, so he was all alone, she says, with a hint of a laugh that acknowledges the disconnect between her age and the topic. I had one about the environmentall sorts of fun things like that. Typical kid stuff.
Enderlins voice is a forcesmooth, strong, and rich, equally capable of barreling through a run, pulling more emotion out of a single note than seemed possible, or delivering subdued, almost spoken, quips. As a writer, she is interested in the motivation behind and aftermath of choices in all kinds of relationships, from romantic to familial to how we view home.
When asked what she hopes listeners take away from Whiskeytown Crier, Enderlin is characteristically empathetic. I hope they get drawn into these different little worlds, maybe experience some other points of view, she says. Music really saved me. Its such a great healer. With music, you can just get lostget out of your own head for three minutes.

Kayla Ray is a Texas Native who delivers country music with rawness and honesty. Her music is polished by her feminine sass and bright smile. While she was raised solely by worldly experience and heartache, Kayla has had the incredible ability to overcome any circumstance. The fire this ability has built inside of her rings loud and clear in her genuine delivery of pure country music. She has surrounded herself with music from our past; growing up she poured over the work of country music giants such as: Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Tanya Tucker, Merle Haggard, George Jones, and Willie Nelson. Although the influence of these artists is prominent in her strong delivery and original lyrics, she has developed a truly unique and captivating style that is all her own. She is very proud and blessed as she puts it, to have had the opportunities that she has had thus far in her music career.
Growing up in the Waco,Texas area, she had countless opportunities to perform with Johnny, Dick and Emily Gimble. And with the help of Tommy Allsup, at 19 she toured two Christmas Ball circuits with The Texas Playboys.
In 2012 Kayla began tour managing and performing with Jason Eadys full band. Certainly you can imagine the kind of fire it takes a young woman in her budding twenties to manage male musicians twice her age. In this role, Kayla did not disappoint. It seems as if she thrives in adversity, loving every moment and singing with conviction, every mile.
In August 2014, Kayla released her first full length album Love and Liquor. This album, produced by her then employer, and mentor, Jason Eady, is a collection of all original country songs, not the new wave country music that exploits marketing tactics, the kind of country music that sticks to your ribs and shakes your inner core.
In 2015 Kayla was named TRRMAs New Female Vocalist of the Year. She is a 4 time MACT Female Vocalist of the year and the album Love and Liquor made many top ten lists in both 2014 and 2015.
Outside of her time with Eady, Kayla began her performing in the Central Texas regions and has now grown to touring nationally. Opening for a conglomerate of acts, as well as headlining many of her own shows, despite her youth, she has lifetimes of experience.
