Kevin Jerome Everson: Quality Control
Sunday, March 17, 2013, 7:30 pm
Los Angeles Filmforum presents:
Kevin Jerome Everson: Quality Control
West Coast premiere!
With filmmaker Kevin Jerome Everson in person

At the Spielberg Theatre at the Egyptian, 6712 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles CA 90028

Tickets: $10 general, $6 students/seniors; free for Filmforum members.  Available by credit card in advance from Brown Paper Tickets at    or by cash or check at the door.

Filmed in the summer of 2010, in a dry cleaners facility in Pritchard, Alabama, near  Mobile, Quality Control exhibits the acts as well the conditions around labor. It is similar stylistically, in form and rhythm, to certain scenarios in Everson's award-winning and critically acclaimed previous films, including Erie (IFFR 2010) and in thematic concerns to several other short form works which follow the daily, quotidian tasks of workers in rest and in motion, including the factory routine captured in the short film A Week in the Hole (2001), which focused on an employee's adjustment to materials, time, space and personnel.

Preceded by the World Premiere of Everson's new short Juneteenth Columbus, Mississippi !

Also note that Kevin Jerome Everson will be at REDCAT with a different program on March 9.

"Kevin Jerome Everson finds a tight focus for his distinctive sensibility in "Quality Control," his cool yet sympathetic observation of workers in an Alabama dry-cleaning shop. While some of his recent films, such as the multipart "Erie," suggest Everson is exploring myriad stylistic directions in his ongoing exploration of African-American working class life, this doc is a straightforward look at individuals in one workplace.

"Inside the shop, which resembles a factory more than a neighborhood store, workers are seen performing typical dry-cleaning chores: hanging clothes on racks; sorting garments in large industrial washing machines; ironing shirts and pants; helping a couple of customers while tending to sewing. Work is arduous and repetitive, yet Everson's unobtrusive camera observes -- as his films often do -- people who can joke while doing tasks many would find humorless."  Robert Koehler, Variety

Kevin Jerome Everson (b.1965) was born and raised in Mansfield, Ohio. He has a MFA from Ohio University and a BFA from the University of Akron. He is currently an Associate Professor of Art at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville. Everson has received fellowships from the Guggenheim, NEA, NEH, Ohio Arts Council and the Virginia Museum, an American Academy Rome Prize, grants from Creative Capital and the Mid-Atlantic, residencies at Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, Yaddo and MacDowell Colony, and numerous university fellowships. http://people.virginia.edu/~ke5d/index.htm

With a sense of place and historical research, Kevin Jerome Everson films combine scripted and documentary moments with rich elements of formalism. The subject matter is the gestures or tasks caused by certain conditions in the lives of working class African Americans and other people of African descent. The conditions are usually physical, social-economic circumstances or weather. Instead of standard realism he favors a strategy that abstracts everyday actions and statements into theatrical gestures, in which archival footage is re-edited or re-staged, real people perform fictional scenarios based on their own lives and historical observations intermesh with contemporary narratives. The films suggest the relentlessness of everyday lifealong with its beautybut also present oblique metaphors for art-making.
