THE BAULKHAM HILLS AFRICAN LADIES TROUPE
THE BAULKHAM HILLS AFRICAN LADIES TROUPE
Directed by: Ros Horin
62 min (UK, Australia)
2016

A film about breaking the silence and finding your voice, through the transformative power of theatre. A group of traumatized refugee women, who have all suffered sexual abuse and violence, agree to take part in the risky challenge of creating and performing in a play about their lives. But will this theatre project help them or harm them?

We follow the women's journey over a 5 year period, it is an emotional roller coaster of tears and laughter as the women unlock deep memories and feelings, through the process of trying to make art. The film includes moments of intimate personal revelations, revealing their fears and doubts,as well as extraordinary moments of breakthrough and growth. The film also opens out to see how the effects of this theatre project, play out in the women's families and personal lives.

Five years later, with sold out and hugely successful seasons behind them; the women are off on a triumphant tour to perform their play at the Women of the World Festival,at the iconic Southbank Centre in London. No longer victims, they have found their voices and are now charismatic, empowered and inspirational survivors, with an important message to spread.
