The story begins with the world famous writer Chingiz Aitmatov, a student of the Literary Institute in Moscow who goes to visit the 'manaschi' narrator Sayakbai to gain a better understanding of the epic of Manas. During the two days spent with Sayakbai, the narrator talks about his life, about becoming a 'manaschi' storyteller, not as a personal choice but as a calling at the behest of the spirit of Manas and his participation in the Kyrgyz uprising against the Russian autocracy in 1916 during the First World War. Sayakbai also talks of taking part in the defense of Moscow among the Panfilov division of Kyrgyz and Kazakh soldiers during the Second World War. The atheistically inclined student and future literary figure Aitmatov begins to understand the spiritual culture and the roots of the people. At the end of the film the writer begins to see spirits of the characters of the epic of Manas with his own eyes. Sayakbay Karalaev gives his blessing to Chyngyz Aitmatov and the patron of the great storyteller will accompany the young writer on his way to worldwide fame.

SOMEONE GOOD WILL FIND YOU
9m  Short Narrative   Completed Jul 2016
Germany, US
DIRECTED BY: Leelila Strogov

A well-intentioned Chinese immigrant father tries to teach his son, David, how to make it in America. When David becomes enamoured by a Superman costume in a store window, his father sees an opportunity to impart to him the importance of hard work, thrift, and delayed gratification. But when the time comes for David to reap the rewards of his efforts, it turns out that the lessons hes learned transcend those his father intended. Revealing the human capacity for connection, compassion, and sacrifice, Someone Good Will Find You is a story about the lessons parents try to teach their children, and the unintended ones children learn on their own.
