It is no accident that flying on todays commercial airliners is extremely safe. There are only 1.6 fatal accidents per 10,000,000 hours of flight time, which makes flying significantly safer than driving to the airport. The FAAs airliner certification program is largely responsible for this enviable record.

Just this past January, Boeing announced that its 787-10 Dreamliner received an amended type certificate (ATC) from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), clearing the airplane for commercial service.

The awarding of ATC capped a successful flight test program that began in March 2017 and involved three flight test airplanes that accumulated about 900 test hours. Boeings flight test program team took the airplanes through a series of tests to confirm the airplanes handling, systems and overall performance met internal requirements and certification standards to ensure safety of flight.

Using lecture and actual crash test videos, the instructor will illustrate the FAAs 10 safety tests that a new airliner design is required to pass before it will be certified to carry passengers.

Bruce Wright spent over 50 years in the Aerospace Industry, 34 with the Skunk Works (the official alias for Lockheed Martin's Advanced Development Programs/Projects). During that time he participated in the design and development of 31 aircraft and spacecraft. He led the development teams in 19 of those. He is the "father" of the F-22 Raptor stealth fighter. He taught aircraft design and history of air and space at Cal Poly until his retirement.
