Potters Lane Repurposing Recycled Shipping Containers (Case Study)

Potters Lane is a veteran housing project that provides for formerly homeless American heroes. It is the first of its kind to be built from recycled and renovated shipping containers. In delivering this development, the project team renovated modified-steel shipping containers, transforming them into fully functional and aesthetically pleasing housing units that complement the surrounding neighborhoods.
Learning Objectives
1.Design & Approval: Recycled Shipped Containers - Each unit is about 450 square feet and has a bedroom/dining area, a kitchen, and a bathroom. The complex offers both indoor and outdoor common spaces where residents have the opportunity to interact with each other. These common spaces were closely integrated into the project design to cultivate an ongoing sense of community.
2.Fast Tracking the Construction Schedule - The design and permitting process for container projects are different than a typical project. Since the majority of the project components are constructed off-site, these components are inspected in the factory thus reducing the time for on-site inspection during construction. This process offers a more aggressive timeline for construction, and for Potters Lane, the factory is located within the same county.
3.Sustainable Repurposing - There are four million containers in the ports of the United States due to the trade deficit. Container projects are also highly sustainable, they are already LEED Silver equivalent out of the factory. Reusing containers for structures would eliminate the need for other types of framing such as wood, steel, or concrete. Since they are made of Corten Steel, capable of carrying 60,000 lbs. of cargo and stack ten high, they have incredible structural integrity.
4.Design to Address Veteran Homelessness and Mental Health - The project is comprised of 16 units and it includes on-site services to cater for individual and group counseling, medical care, veterans liaisons and employment programs. The project offers both indoor and outdoor spaces, with beautiful gardens and native plants to provide a sustainable environment that soothes the soul. Through tranquil common areas, residents interact with each other and help build a sense of community.

Robert M. Simons, AIA, President and Partner of SVA Architects, has devoted his 35-year career to creating spaces that enrich peoples lives and served as the Architect of Record on Potters Lane. Simons believes that exceptional planning, architecture, and public-private partnerships can unlock assets to improve cities and neighborhoods. His vision for creating spaces that enhance the quality of lives of others has resulted in an array of innovative developments and internationally award-winning projects. Simons career has been characterized by the development of multi-use institutional facilities, hospitality, design-build developments, and projects spawning from public-private partnerships (P3). As President of SVA Architects, Simons foresight to pursue innovative P3 projects has helped grow the firms spectrum of work, including opportunities with unique economic, design, and sustainability components. Under his leadership, the continually expanding 50+ person firm is focused on delivering learning and living environments that improve not only the users experience but the health of the local communities. Simons earned his Bachelor of Architecture from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.
Wahid Yonus, Architect, CSI, LEED AP, Senior Associate Partner of SVA, was the Project Architect on Potters Lane and has built a reputation in the architectural industry. Prior to joining the SVA team, Yonus has gained substantial architectural experience from notable firms, including Skidmore Owings and Merrill (SOM) and SMWM. His career includes 30-years work on a variety of project types, ranging from high rises and mixed-use commercial projects to institutional facilities and affordable housing developments. As a result of his experience in designing and constructing complex developments throughout the State of California, Yonus has a high level of expertise and knowledge in building codes, accessibility and varies product types. He is a licensed architect, LEED Accredited Professional by USGBC, and member of the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI).
