Campbell's The Hero's Journey and You -- Leona Evans and Matthew Evans

Joseph Campbell, an American mythological researcher, wrote a famous book about a Hero's Journey entitled The Hero with a Thousand Faces. In his lifelong research Campbell discovered many common patterns running through hero myths and stories from around the world. Years of research lead Campbell to discover several basic stages that almost every hero-quest goes through (no matter what culture the myth is a part of). He calls this common structure the monomyth.
Campbell believes that as humans we purposefully probe stories in order to extract meaning that will help us move forward in life. He says that were seeking myths (themes; meaning) within manifestations (films; stories). For Campbell, the remnants of mythology line the walls of our interior systems of belief, like shards of broken pottery in an archaeological site.
journeys undertaken see characters undergo both physical and emotional battles, which work together to bring them to a better understanding of their lives and their places in the world. As such, the journey is full of duality symbol and spirit; body and soul; manifest and myth; plot and story. In other words, as the character does (action), he or she becomes (character arc).
Your instructors will help you see that a Heros Journey for you could describe your own existential process that you as a human undertake as you learn to adjust to changes in your world and your life.
Your Heros Journey can be a mythological pattern that enables you to grasp your own experiences as part of a significant process of personal unfolding. Within this larger context even negative experiences can take on constructive meaning. The Heros Journey can resonate for you because it describes your innate process of growth and transformation. It is far more than myth; it is a guide to understanding and living your life on purpose.
Leona Evans holds a Master of Arts in Religious Studies and is certified in Conflict Management and Peacebuilding from the United States Institute of Peace. Her book, The Evolving Peacemaker: A Commitment to Nonviolence, received the 2017 Living Now Evergreen Medal for World Peace. Evans has been the minister at Unity of San Luis Obispo for the past twenty-five years, and is a motivational speaker whose messages have been heard throughout the world.
Matthew J. Evans is the creator of the short film: A Quest for Peace: Nonviolence Among Religions and won the Teen Art of Making Peace Award at the United Nations Third High Level Forum on a Culture of Peace in 2014.
