Backyard is born out of our love of food, friends and the community that raised us. Growing up in the Bay has given us so much access to diversity, culture, civic engagement and creativity. We want to show our appreciation by raising funds for people and organizations that make all that possible while doing what we do best - communing over delicious food with fam and friends, old and new.

THE BACKGROUND:

Last year, we decided to turn our casual weekly potlucks into something a little bigger and more intentional. We began a series of seasonal dinner parties in our yard for friends, family, neighbors, and strangers to fundraise for local nonprofits doing important work in the community. We choose an organization whose work we admire for its efforts to create sustainable movements and a more equitable society in the changing East Bay. One important goal for these events is to offer people a chance to learn about and feel inspired by critical work happening in their own neighborhoods, to engage in conversations about those issues in a more intimate setting, and to feel hope during a difficult political time.

THE ORGANIZATION:

For this Backyard - our Spring Edition - we are partnering with the nonprofit Conscious Kitchen.

Despite California's economic and agricultural richness, over 1 in 8 Californians are hungry or at serious risk of hunger, and approximately 1 in 5 children may go to bed hungry. Obesity - due to limited access to healthy, affordable foods - can also be a symptom of malnutrition, and nearly 1/3 of the State's children are overweight or obese. For a majority of Californian kids, the meals they eat at school are their primary source of nutrition.

Conscious Kitchen (CK) works to improve the health, well-being, and life outcomes for kids and communities by shifting the paradigm around food service and building a local ecological food system in and around our schools. Through a collaborative, replicable approach, CK partners with schools and school districts to break the cycle of overly processed school lunches, transitioning them to meals created in onsite school kitchens, based on five foundational attributes; fresh, local, organic, seasonal and non-GMO. A CK meal includes a main course, side of veggies, fruit and milk or water. The average food cost for a breakfast is $1.35 and $2.85 for a lunch.

Ticket sales and donations for this event will go towards CK's planned expansion into the East Bay through a partnership with the West Contra Costa County School District, which serves 54 schools and over 30,000 students, 70% of whom live below the poverty line. Last year, CK did demonstration weeks at two schools in the district - Peres Elementary in Richmond and Madera Elementary in El Cerrito. The schools and CK are now jointly raising funds to support year-long pilot programs at both, and CK is working on a complete remodel and rebuilding of the kitchen at Peres Elementary which serves 600 kids, K-8th grade.

THE EVENT DETAILS:

The event will kick off Sunday, June 10th at 3pm with music, drinks and snacks. Then we'll have a family-style dinner cheffed up by cooks from Chez Panisse. Members from CK will be there to share info and answer questions! There will also be special demos and a super dope auction/raffle.

It'll be going down in West Oakland, and we'll send out the address upon purchase: $40 for entry (includes all of the above). If you can't attend, we'll miss you, but you can still donate. If you can attend but are feeling extra generous, you can donate too!

Tickets sold out both times so far, so get 'em while they're hot!

We feel lucky to be able to partner with amazing local organizations doing such important and ambitious work -- and to have all of y'all to share in the cause with! Thank you for your support and can't wait to see everyone there!
