PROGRAM
Julia Perry, Short Piece for Orchestra Florence Price, Violin Concerto No. 2, with Er-Gene Kahng, violin Chris Castro, Sing High (World Premier) William Grant Still, Symphony No. 1 "Afro-American Symphony"
Celebrating Black History Month, the Camellia Symphony Orchestra (now on its 56th season) will be featuring works by four remarkable African American composers, including two female composers. There was recent international coverage in the NY Times and NPR about the recent rediscovery of Florence Price's Violin Concerto No. 2. Our soloist for this performance will be Er-Gene Kahng, who actually rediscovered and recorded this concerto to great acclaim.
Besides the famous Afro-American Symphony by William Grant Still, also on the program will be a new work (especially written for Er-Gene Kahng and the Camellia Symphony Orchestra) by young composer Chris Castro, who grew up in NYC and studied at the Juilliard School and at UC Davis. His new piece "Sing High" is very beautiful, transparent, and jazz inspired.
