Advanced Soils, Cover Crops, and Optimizing Nitrogen
SOILS WORKSHOP
This class is happening in two locations on the same day! Please choose which location/time you would like to attend when registering.
9:00-11:30am - Sequim, Barn Classroom behind Nash's Store, 4681 Sequim-Dungeness Way, Sequim
2:30-5:00pm - Bremerton, WSU Classroom 406, Norm Dicks Building 345 6th St., Bremerton

Join us for a half-day, hands-on soils workshop for farmers. Doug Collins, WSU soil scientist, will cover basics of soil chemistry and fertility, and will also demonstrate some new and exciting research on quick nitrate testing.

Growers are encouraged to bring their latest soil test results and to come with site-specific questions.
Who should attend: Vegetable growers and market gardeners.
What to bring: Most recent soil test results -- and, if you'd like to participate in the lab demonstration of instant nitrate testing, please also bring 2-3 cups of soil. (Select your soil sample from a depth of 0-12." Keep sample refrigerated and in a sealed bag to preserve moisture.)

Topics to be covered:
Soil fertility, health, productivity, and tilth
Soil nutrients, nutrient pools, and pH
Interpreting soil test results
Organic matter, cover crops, and nitrogen mineralization
Compost, organic fertilizers, other amendments and application rates

Research to be presented:
Doug Collins will present his new research on quick nitrate testing: "Optimizing Nitrogen Management on Organic and Biologically Intensive Vegetable Farms Activity: Using quick nitrate test strips to manage nitrogen fertility."

About the speaker:

Doug Collins is an Extension Faculty with WSUs Food Systems Program and an affiliate faculty with the WSU Department of Crop and Soil Sciences. His extension programs and research focus on soil quality and vegetable and fruit production for small farms.  Doug has a Ph.D. in soil science from Washington State University, an M.S. in Plant Pathology from Montana State University, and a B.A. in biology from Colorado College.
