Nickel and Dimed by Joan Holden
Barbara Ehrenreichs voyage into the world of the working poor made headlines when her novel about her low-wage service jobs was released in 2001. A best seller, Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America was adapted in 2002 into a play, and unfortunately, it remains relevant to our current socio-economic landscape. Nickel and Dimed reminds us that the promise of a "good day's pay for a good day's work" is, for a large swath of the population, a quaint fantasy. Ehrenreich's research was conducted in the late 90s, and perhaps what is most disturbing is how little has changed. Joan Holdens stage adaptation is a focused comic epic shadowed with tragedy.
