A woman with a traumatic childhood initiates a journey to the darkest boundaries of human beings.

We are so delighted to have another Nicole Chen film screen again this year. Ms. Chen is the epitome of independent filmmaking and the actuality of the relationships cultivated "off" camera are what bring the magic to the festival industry. She flew across the globe last season for our first year festival and brought with her an enthusiasm that was a major contributing factor in the success of the Norwich Radical Film Festival.

As is often still the case in the West, family ties play an integral part in binding the lives of millions of Chinese people, who often forfeit their dreams under the heavy persuasion of tight family constraints. As the growing superpower comes increasingly under the spotlight amid an approaching trade war with the USA, this tale of a deaf man determined to defy the odds to pursue his passion shows us that while the heads of nations may squabble, it is worth remembering, in the words of the murdered Labour MP Jo Cox, "We have far more in common than that which divides us."

Halfway between film essay and video-souvenir, this story is framed around family links. Using the images recorded by his parents on a cruise ship, the author invokes a dystopian society where the problems of collective coexistence are solved by an algorithm and where the prohibition of abortion is compensated by a law that allows parents to prosecute their children if, at the age of 30, they have not fulfilled the expectations placed on them. In La Veda, the author's voice-over derives on his fatherly figures, stripping them with brutal honesty under the gaze of an existential void shaped like a virus and with the only testimony of a video camera that is treated as if it were a newcomer to the world.
