These shorts exemplify a few of the many multifaceted qualities of womankind...
Strength, silliness, physical desire, to serve (or not serve) in the military, to transcend religious mores, to defy national policy, to express inner greatness, or to just be heard.

P.S.
Just recognized after I programmed these shorts that I know three of the directors! Through all of my adventures (and misadventures!) I am so grateful to have met so many amazing females making great cinema in a very male dominated system...never complaining but blazing their own trail of storytelling that resonates.  Their real life stories are just as compelling as the subjects in their films!  That innovation translates on screen every time and is an inspiration for me to keep programming the good fight!

The Creation Myth
Dir. Satinder Kaur  (USA 2017)
5min 15s
An experimental, personal essay film about the pursuit of cinema. The director - Satinder Kaur - takes the viewer on a journey through her life.

Satinder Kaur is a determined dreamer who believes storytelling to be her superpower. A U.S. Army veteran, she served in Baghdad from 2005 to 2006. Kaur earned a B.A. in Journalism from the University of Washington and went on to receive an MFA in film directing from University of Southern California. She was a recipient of the James Bridges Award for excellence in film directing, and a fellow at the Writers Guild Foundations Veterans Writing Project. Kaur has worked in human rights video advocacy for the past four years. She has written and directed several award-winning and widely viewed shorts. Her film, The Last Killing, on police brutality in Punjab, India, won the Amnesty International Best Human Rights short award in 2014. She is currently working on her first feature film that explores the complexities of being a "brown" woman in America.

Battalion to the Beat*
Dir. Eimi Imanishi  (USA/Algeria/Western Sahara)
14 min

Battalion To My Beat is set in the Western Saharan refugee camps in Tindouf, Algeria, and follows the story of Mariam, a rebellious 13-year-old girl who naively envisions herself a Jeanne D'Arc that will free her people from the occupation.

Objector*-
Dir. Molly Stuart (USA 2017) 16mins

Semillas de Guaumúchil* (Guamuchil Seeds)
Dir. Carolina Corral (Mexico 2016) 17 min

The documentary presents the stories of five indigenous women who have been unfairly incarcerated in Mexico. They share, in their own words, their experiences of access to justice and how literature empowered their resilience from inside jail. They discover creative writing while in prison and share their poetry once they are freed.

Bride of Frankie
Dir. Devi Snively  (USA 2017)
19 min

Director's Statement: " We so hope you enjoy Bride of Frankie, our darkly comedic feminist, anti-patriarchal nod to Mary Shelley in honor of the upcoming bicentennial of FRANKENSTEIN. It celebrates feminism and LGBTQ romance at a time when both are hitting a new low here in the U.S.

Programmers note...I met Devi almost 10 years ago when I was a nascent programmer at the Method Fest in Los Angeles...this is why I love what I do...you make the most solid connections that endure the test of time!

All My Dead
Dir. Astra Zoldnere (Latvia 2014)
14min
They met on Christmas Eve, beyond one's usual living-space... at the morgue. In an outburst of feelings, they try to manipulate each other in order to get what they want. She wants him, but he wants to vanish - following the rules of black comedy, will either achieve their Xmas wish?
