Coco is 17 and feels a desperate need to become famous even though she seems to lack the necessary talent. She is willing to do anything for recognition and avoid becoming an everyday "loser". She skips school to attend castings, music videos shoots, and to film YouTube clips but faces one humiliation after another and is quickly pushed to her limits. With her "Coco Channel", she tries to expand her notoriety on the Internet and create the successful, loved, and confident character she wishes she really could be. As a crossmedia project, connecting film with the online video scene, Wannabe tells the story of a young YouTuber, who builds herself a fictitious world on the Internet (www.youtube.com/cocochannel99).
I cannot go to a concert without people living it through their screen...recording every minute in hopes they can upload it online and someone out there somewhere can watch it...leave a thumbs up..."validate" them...as if the moment is not real unless someone else approves. I find many of the Millennial generation feels lost despite the fact they have created an online identity for themselves where they are loved....escaping 'real" life in favor of an avatar. How may "Coco's" are there hoping to transcend mediocrity out there?

Miko's psychological observations on his familys home movie shot between 1993 and 1996 reflect a post-colonial obsession with a facade to mask an internal poverty. Through time, the American dream lives through the promise of assimilation disintegrates, leaving a spectacle of consumerism and vacation.
People did record portions of their lives before smartphones and the Internet...here is a sample of how different video was and how more selective in footage one used because of the limited accessibility of the technology...
