Medicinal Plant Families and Actions
What secrets lie in the caverns of plant taxonomy? For an herbalist, these classifications hold all kinds of useful information. Recognizing patterns of medicinal action in plant families can allow one to identify potential analogs worldwide. In addition, knowing plant families can help one to reach an identification more quickly. Finally, plant families are useful in remember- ing energetic qualities. For example, did you know that almost all members of the Apiaceae (carrot) family are warming?
In this class, we will learn about several of the major plant families common to our Materia Medica, what patterns they show, and how that information can help structure and inform our use of herbs. Students will get an opportunity to engage and discuss the knowledge they learn in class in a few hands on activities.
We will be using the model of the four qualities, and also be discussing organ affinities and herbal actions. This class would be the most helpful for people with some prior herbal or botanical experience.
