Enduring 2600 years as one of the world's most widely-read classics, Ramayana tells the story of Prince Ram's banishment from his kingdom accompanied by his wife Sita and brother Lakshman. As they make their way deep into the forest, the trio encounter an array of magical characters, including tribal folk and gentle forest animals, giants and wizards, heroic monkeys and bears, and an enchanted golden deer.
While Ramayana! is a "school play," it is also a massive and ambitious production anywhere in the world and a major contribution to the Indian diaspora culture in the Bay Area. The annual musical production Ramayana! is respectful of the epic's place in Indian religious and cultural traditions, while presenting a modern and accessible story for a contemporary audience.
For 40 years Mount Madonna School has been enthralling audiences throughout the San Francisco bay area and beyond! This musical extravaganza includes a cast of 200 talented students and a support crew of faculty, staff and hundreds of community volunteers.
It is a story of love, adventure, separation and an eventual joyous reunion, in an ancient allegory of the battle of good and evil. The show is filled with exciting action, spectacular costuming, family humor and original, live music.
As the story unfolds, relevant, profound and subtle themes emerge, not only the power of goodness and the determination of love, but also the need for compassion to all beings.
