Adventures in Glass -- Richard Lasiewski

This fun two-session course will explore different ways of making and working with glass.

At the first session you will see a video and slide presentation about the how and why of Glassblowing, Glass beadmaking, Fusing, and Casting. You will also see a slide presentation that is a tour of some glass factories. Afterwards you will have a better understanding of basics of glass, how it is made and how to work with it.

The second session will start with a slide presentation on the History of Glass starting around 1500 BC until the present and how it relates to other things happening in our history. This presentation is based mainly on the collection at the Corning Museum of Glass in New York and a few other collections. Then You will also see some videos about recent glass production in India and the Middle east, and glassmakers in Afghanistan using techniques similar to how it was done in ancient times.

Richard Lasiewski O.D., is a retired Diagnostic Radiologist who was a student of art, Glass Arts, and Metalsmithing at Cal Poly after retiring in 2000. He was a Summer Glass Program instructor at Cal Poly for 7 years Teaching Glass Fusing and Beadmaking. These talks were part of that program.
