A Day With Mozart, Beethoven, and Berlioz -- Sandy Eastman
Saturday May 5 2018 9am - 10:15am class, 11:00am - 1:00pm rehearsal

SLO Library Conference Room

$5 for LLCC members, $10 for non-members

Sandy Eastman is offering you an opportunity to attend his pre-concert class and the symphony dress rehearsal for a San Luis Obispo Symphony concert on May 5.

This course will be in two parts.  In the early morning, there will be a lecture about the composers, about the pieces that will be played in the rehearsal, and about the soloist.  In the late morning, the class, as a group, will attend the dress rehearsal of the performance in the Christopher Coan Center at the PAC at Cal Poly.  At the dress rehearsal the SLO Symphony conductor will speak as he conducts, giving background information, musicology, and notes on harmony.  With the conductor's broad knowledge and stage presence, the dress rehearsals are fairly comprehensive.

The San Luis Obispo Symphony offers anyone in the community an opportunity to attend the dress rehearsal of its concerts during the morning (11am-1pm) preceding the evening of the performance.

There is a cost now to attend the Symphony rehearsals. At the PAC, adults must pay $15 and seniors (age 65 and older) must pay $10. The rehearsal is free to children. The tickets for the dress rehearsal will available a week before the performance at the PAC box office, by calling them at (805) 7564849, or online here.

The May 5 program:

The Symphonys Season Finale features full, forceful and bold music from Beethoven and Berlioz, as well as the lilting melodies of Mozart. The music will have you swaying and perhaps nodding your head to the rhythms.

The concert begins with Beethovens Egmont Overture, Op. 84, written for a play, but scored by Beethoven in defiance to Napoleon naming himself Emperor.

Virtuoso and popular pianist Orion Weiss returns to the Symphony to play Mozarts Piano Concerto No. 21, a recognizable masterpiece.

The Classics season ends with Berliozs Symphonie Fantastique, Op. 14. With two sets of timpani and big brass, the music expresses Berliozs experience of falling in love and then cascading into the depths of despair. The five movements will take you on a romantic and painstaking journey like no other. The concert is simply classical at its best and puts the orchestra through its paces for a grand finale.

Andrew Sewell, Conductor

The San Luis Obispo Symphony has a new music director - Maestro Andrew Sewell. This internationally renowned native of New Zealand ushers in a new era for the Symphony.

Silsby Eastman (Sandy) grew up and spent his working life in the Los Angeles area before moving to Pismo Beach.  He has taught at Cuesta and Allan Hancock Colleges and has been playing bassoon, baritone saxophone, and bridge as often as possible.  After graduating from Occidental College and Indiana University, he studied bassoon with Walter Ritchie and conducting with Lauris Jones and Richard Lert.  He served as a bandsman in the Air Force and taught in San Bernardino, La Canada, Paramount and Agoura Hills.  He is also a former member of the Long Beach Coterie Sinfonique, the Pasadena Community Orchestra and the Topanga Symphony.
