Design of Deep Soil Mixing Walls Support for Excavation
Prof. Jean Louis Briaud, Texas A & M

Abstract:
The lecture starts with a review of excavation retaining structure options and associated current practices for top down walls. General design criterions are presented and ways to meet the required criterions are discussed. Then the deep soil mixing method is outlined including advantages and limitations. The strength and stiffness of the soil grout mixture is addressed. The design steps are presented with the two major issues being external and internal stability not to forget seepage analysis. Different approaches are recommended for cantilever walls, one tieback walls, multiple tieback walls, vertical capacity, structural resistance of retaining elements, movements. Some case histories are used.

Biography:
Professor Jean-Louis Briaud is a Distinguished Professor and Holder of the Spencer J. Buchanan Chair in the Zachry Department of Civil Engineering at Texas A&M University, a Distinguished Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and a Professional Engineer.
