Six Sessions

$30 for LLCC members, $60 for non-members.

This is a six session course.  Purchasing a ticket for this course entitles you to attend all six sessions.

We live on the edge of the largest ocean basin on earth.  We enjoy its beauty and many of us have participated in its recreational possibilities or explored its edge or consumed its culinary gifts.  But what do we know of its mysteries, such as why do the basins exist in the first place and how deep are they, or where did all the water come from, or why do we have tides, or how do marine animals live in total darkness in the ocean depths?

This is a DVD course with lectures given by a noted marine geologist who received his doctoral degree at UC Santa Cruz.  The DVD is especially rich in graphics, charts, diagrams and videos to supplement the lectures.

Oceanography is a very broad area of study that involves the application of all the basic fields of science.  Accordingly, this course will describe what geologists, physicists, chemists and biologist have learned, and how they learned it, of the part of our planet that covers over 70% of its surface.

In this third set of six sessions we will cover things in motion such as the trade winds, storms, hurricanes, coastal erosion, the Gulf Stream, and upwelling; life in special habitats like tidal areas, coral reefs, and hydrothermal vents; closing with coverage of climate change, global warming, marine pollution and the future of the oceans.

You can enjoy this course whether or not you attended Part 1 and/or Part 2 of this course.

Gene Kalland taught biology for over 30 years at California State University Dominguez Hills, his specialties being endocrinology and developmental biology. He earned his BA in Biology at CSU Northridge (way back then known as San Fernando Valley State College) and his PhD in Zoology at Indiana University, Bloomington. He has facilitated DVD courses for LLCC on the Universe, Oceanography, Evolution, Genetics, and Darwin.
