Greek Myths That Live Today -- Andy Greensfelter

One definition of mythology is "stories that never were but always are."

Some stories are told through several millennia, often handed down orally from generation to generation over centuries before they are written. Stories remain relevant for years when they resonate with our psyches.

In this course we will take a look at one story, the myth about Persephone, Demeter and Hades, that is told in the Homeric Hymn to Demeter and in Ovid's Metamorphoses.

How does this myth relate to our present civilization? How are parts of the story a metaphor for our times and even our individual lives?

Your instructor Andy Greensfelter will provide you with a handout to read before the class meets that will consist of a summary of the myth and some ideas and themes for discussion. This class will be an open discussion about what is in the handout as well as any other ideas and themes members of the class might raise.

Andy Greensfelter is a retired attorney. In retirement, he studied Mythology for two years at Pacifica Graduate Institute.
