Creative Survival: Making Art and Making Life through Chronic Illness
How do we live as artists with chronic pain, illness and post-traumatic stress? How can we be empowered to create our lives through sickness? Creating through Sickness will pair Theater of the Oppressed exercises and concrete skill-sharing to embody various aspects of ongoing healing and survival, while deepening a political lens on our day to day experience as sick people. Topics covered will include:

- Alternatives to Western Medicine
- Nourish: Anti-inflammatory Eating Options
- Mindfullness: Meditations for pain
- Say No: Respecting your Pace
- Say Yes: Mutual Aid
- SKILLZ: staying grounded while triggered
- Muse: Pain and Art
Note: Chava is not a licensed mental health professional. This is a theater-based, educational workshop based in years of lived experience. While the artistic space of self expression, exploration and learning may be therapeutic, this workshop does not constitute professional medical advice or therapy.
This Artist Education workshop series invites artists on the edge of culture to teach their peers about the personal and professional skills theyve developed to thrive on the margins. The program a unique collaboration between Patricks Cabaret, Pangea World Theater, and Soo Visual Arts Center is intended to create collaborative space for artists to share their skills with fellow artists and organizers, to strengthen relationships and build resilience, and to provide opportunities for artists to put their knowledges to work.
This workshop is led by Chava Kokhleffel, a theater artist, educator and organizer with deep roots in Theater/Pedagogy of the Oppressed and physical approaches to devised performance. Annas artistic process sparks in the space between rigorous play and conceptual fervor, creating performances that challenge, connect and incite. She has worked with Childrens Theater Company, Teatro del Pueblo, and Steppingstone Theater Company doing youth-work, as well as performing and directing at Bedlam, Red Eye Theater, Raw Sugar, Patrick's Cabaret and other DIY spaces. Upcoming performances include PUPPET LAB: Lost Lake by Elle Thoni at Heart of the Beast, March 23rd - 25th, 2018.
A note on accessibility: Restrooms on the lower level can be accessed by elevator and include larger stalls equipped with grab bars. All doors to Pangea's facilities adhere to the Americans with Disabilities Act standards of width, with a minimum clear opening of 32 inches.
Food and refreshments are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
