Surfrider Presents: It Ain't Pretty
A documentary about the challenges and triumphs of female big wave surfers fighting sexism in the water, in competition, in the media and in the surf industry with the support of a closely-knit community of like-minded women. Featuring Ocean Beach surfer Bianca Valentis journey from childhood phenom to world-class big wave charger, this probing, incendiary and thought-provoking film takes you inside a growing movement of women that are shattering the shallow and sexualized images of female surfers in the media. Including interviews with top female athletes and awe-inspiring big wave surf footage filmed in the icy waters of Ocean Beach, San Francisco and Mavericks - one of the biggest waves on the planet - this film empowers a new generation of girls to live their dreams and overcome the challenges they face along the way.
ABOUT SURFRIDER
The Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our worlds oceans, waves and beaches. Founded in 1984 by a handful of visionary surfers in Malibu, California, the Surfrider Foundation now maintains over 50,000 members and 90 chapters worldwide.
While surfers founded the Surfrider Foundation, we are not just surfers: skateboarders, snowboarders, kayakers, rock climbers, hikers, sky divers, mountain bikersare all members of the diverse population that is the Surfrider Foundation.
The DC Chapter represents residents from the greater Washington, DC, area, including western Maryland and Virginia. It naturally draws coastal transplants who have found themselves landlocked, as well as river- and bay-oriented natives. Because of our location amidst lawmakers, the chapters efforts include legislative agendas as well as river/bay clean-ups and public education. Most importantly, we realize that despite physically being hours from the nearest beach, our actions locally can significantly affect the health of the coast, the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers, the Chesapeake Bay, and the rest of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed!
Locally, the DC Chapter works to improve coastal water quality through upstream improvements, achieved through hands-on projects and cleanups, education programs, and advocacy campaigns. We remove an estimated 10,000 lbs of trash annually through river cleanups on the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers. The DC chapter has also been an integral player in the Trash Free Anacostia coalition, which helped pass the 5-cent bag fee on single-use plastic and paper bags in the District in 2010 and many many more.
We have 3,000 members and supporters in the DC area. The DC Chapter of Surfrider is a fully volunteer run organization. Our Volunteer Coordinators and Executive Committee donate their time and efforts to maintain the Chapter and organize our campaigns. To sustain our environmental efforts, we rely heavily upon membership fees and donations.
