Les rendez-vous d'Anna
In one of Akermans most penetrating character studies, Anna, an accomplished filmmaker (played by Aurore Clément), makes her way through a series of European cities to promote her latest movie. Via a succession of eerie, exquisitely shot, brief encounterswith men and women, family and strangerswe come to see her emotional and physical detachment from the world.
"The impression of Akerman as a perpetual wanderer is confirmed by the autobiographical Les Rendez-vous DAnna, which follows a filmmaker (Aurore Clément) from one European city to the next on a tour in support of her latest effort. Its like the anti-8 1/2: Rather than the vibrant, chaotic carnival of life that besets Marcello Mastroianni in Federico Fellinis film, Akermans director drifts through a succession of hotel rooms and train depots in a state of total detachment. As Michael Koresky writes in the liner notes, Rendez-vous speaks to her experience as director as nomad; that personal touch is what elevates these films to something greater than chilly aesthetic exercises." - Scott Tobias, AV Club
"Les Rendez-vous dAnna seems today in retrospect a very worthy successor, continuing Akermans exploration and articulation of the feminine experience in a generation younger than Dielmans housewife approaching middle age, though in a film more concise and less overtly demanding due to a greater variety of interpersonal situations" - David Blakeslee, Criterioncast
