Cervantes Global Parents Network. Raising Bilingual Children: Are we getting it right?
CERVANTES GLOBAL PARENTS NETWORK
Whether youre a first-time parent, a mom of twins, a father looking to connect with other dads or just in search of some local families to hang out with, theres a group for you! Join us and attend our monthly panel discussions and networking events.

Our mission is to provide a hub that brings together parents to discuss topics of common interest in education, health, the role of parents, understanding and communicating with the next generation, raising respectful, responsible and resilient children.

We have all heard that effective networking is one of the best ways to develop connections. Its true. But if you are a working mom, dad, grandparent, baby sitter, etc. you are probably laughing (or crying) at the thought of attending after-work events. With our extended list of obligations to work, to your childrens school and activities, to home and community, its nearly impossible to justify spending time at additional events. But dont despair  there is hope! In the craziness of our lives, join the Cervantes Global Parents Network and we will help you network without burdening your busy schedule.  We hope to become a key factor in maintaining your post-child sanity.

Please join whether you are anticipating or already raising a child.

Program:
10:30-10:50 am Kim Potowskis talk "No Child Left Monolingual."
10:50-11:10 am Round table
11:10-11:30 am Q & A
11:30 am  12:30 pm Reception/networking

Our "Raising Bilingual Children: Are we getting it right?" talk is relevant to the parents and family members of any bilingual child. The discussion will cover 3 main aspects of raising bilingual children: The brain, at school, and at home.

It will provide plenty of practical advice for creating a positive bilingual environment and how you can best encourage your child's bilingual and bicultural development. Our main speaker, Kim Potowski, will share her firsthand experience and facts from the latest research on bilingualism. There will be plenty of time to ask questions after the talk and during the networking reception.

About the speaker: Kim Potowski
Dr. Kim Potowski is Professor of Spanish linguistics in the Department of Hispanic & Italian Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She directs the Heritage Spanish program and is the founding director of its summer study abroad program in Oaxaca, Mexico. As a Fulbright scholar she studied the linguistic and educational experiences of U.S.-raised Mexican youth whose families had returned to Mexico. She has authored and edited over 12 books including Mexi-Rican Spanish and identity in Chicago (2016), El español de los Estados Unidos (2015), Heritage language teaching: Research and practice (2014), Language diversity in the USA (2011), and Language and identity in a dual immersion school (2007), as well as the Spanish textbooks Conversaciones escritas (2nd edition, 2017) and Dicho y hecho (10th edition, 2015). Her advocacy for the value of dual language education in promoting bilingualism and academic achievement was the focus of her 2013 TEDx talk No child left monolingual.
