Elio Leturia
No Literal, poster design exhibit
NO LITERAL is a graphic design exhibit that presents through 12 posters different examples that explore, with humor, the correct use of accent marks, the letter ñ (eñe,) the differences between gender when using articles, and the danger when translating words phonetically.
Spanish is a gender-oriented language. Nouns, adjectives, articles are masculine, feminine and neutral in both singular and plural forms. The letter ñ has a special sound, and the tilde is an integral part of it. Otherwise it becomes an n, altering the meaning of the word.
Some words in Spanish and English look similar and present similar pronunciation. But that does not mean they mean the same. So before you say, I speak Spanish be sure you are aware of this to avoid looking like a fool.
Elio Leturia is an Associate Professor at the Department of Communication of Columbia College Chicago where he teaches multimedia journalism and graphic design. His design work has been recognized by The Society for News Design, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and the Associated Church Press. In 2017 he was presented with the Lisagor Award in the Best Short Film Documentary category for Tita Turns 100. A Fulbright scholar, Leturia is also a bilingual writer and a blogger, and an actor with Aguijón Theater in Chicago.
