Duo Mandolim & Bass

The Chicago Choro Club and The Musical Offering welcome this amazing duo of representing two generations of masters of Brazilan music Ian Coury and Ebinho Cardoso. The duo tackles the rigor and spontaneity of classical Choro and Brazilian Samba, as well as original. Their combined sound is marked in its uniqueness -- a blend of 15-year-old Ians staggering virtuosity coupled with Ebinhos unique voice on the bass.

About the musicians...

Ian Coury
Mandolin player Ian Coury was born in the Brazilian capital, Brasilia. At 8 years old, he started playing the instrument and chose Choro as his musical genre. His inspirations came from mandolinists such as Jacob do Bandolim, Hamilton de Holanda, and Armandinho Macedo.

Now at the ripe old age of 15, Ian has already been recognized by the Sciences, Arts, History and Literature Brazilian Academy as a Highlighted musician. Also, he has participated in renowned programs such as Global Strings Intensive Course (2015) and Summer Five Week both organized by Berklee College of Music. As a solo mandolinist, Ian performed three well-received shows at the famous Club of Choro in Brasilia.

Ebinho Cardoso
Ebinho Cardoso, at age 40, is an acknowledged virtuoso on his instrument. Due to the uniqueness of his music and technique, he is one of the most respected Brazilian bassists performing today. A composer, arranger, singer and researcher, Ebinho uses atypical elements of the electric bass, fully exploring the range of possibilities. In addition using bass as an accompanying instrument or as a solo instrument, he has found a unique way of playing chords on the bass that characterize his playing style; a style that combines precision and refinement.

In part, he is able to achieve his sound by tuning his instrument in new ways and at higher pitches. His music blends traces of jazz with the idiosyncrasies of classical music interwoven with the rich sounds of his native Brazil. The result of his years of study is his book, "Harmony and Chord Dictionary as Applied to the Electric Bass".

Already with several CDs and instructional DVDs under his belt, 2017 saw the release of Engenheiros," an album with the pianist Fernando Michelin, with poems by renowned Brazilian writer João Cabral de Melo Neto).
