Hilltop Educator Institute Presents:
"Making Learning Visible": Documentation and Pedagogical Narration
Saturday, February 24th
Facilitated by Laurie Kocher

Educators engaged in child-centered, reflective practice use Documentation as a tool for studying children's experiences, planning curriculum, and bringing forward children's voices.

You are invited to join a conversation about the use of Pedagogical Narration and Documentation in Reggio-inspired schools, facilitated by Canadian scholar and educator Laurie Kocher.

This session will help participants explore ways that documentation can foster responsive, ethical, and social justice focused approaches to early childhood education and care. Pedagogical Narration affords opportunities for social justice by bringing a focus to power structures, ethical considerations, and social issues that emerge in our work. Studying and telling stories of children's work, through documentation and pedagogical narration, illuminates the thinking and learning taking place in schools for young children.

This event takes place onsite at the "Wonder of Learning" exhibit, which will provide an additional provocation for thinking. The exhibit calls our attention to schools as democratic places for discussion, innovation, and complexity, and provides spectacular examples of pedagogical narration to make learning visible.

The Wonder of Learning - The Hundred Languages of Children exhibit includes traces of work in progress from the municipal infant-toddler centers and preschools in Reggio Emilia, Italy and, as such, is owned by the Preschools and Infant-Toddler Centers, Istituzione of the Municipality of Reggio Emilia. Reggio Children manages this exhibit in its travels all over the world. The North American version of The Wonder of Learning - The Hundred Languages of Children exhibit has been coordinated by NAREA since 2008. Seattle is the 20th North American city to host this third version of The Hundred Languages of Children exhibit.

Laurie Kocher teaches at Capilano University.  She navigates between the worlds of academia and practice, always with a desire to bring the two together.  Lauries academic research and writing focusses primarily on pedagogical documentation practices inspired by Reggio Emilia.  In 2012, she was the project manager for the Wonder of Learning exhibit when it was hosted in Vancouver, BC.
