"In Search of My Father...Walkin' Talkin' Bill Hawkins
Written and Performed by W. Allen Taylor / Original Direction by Ellen Sebastian Chang
Winner of the Best Solo Performance Award by the San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle, this 90-minute one-man play explores the intimate story of Taylor's life-long spiritual search for information on the father he never knew, Bill Hawkins, the first black radio disc jockey in Cleveland, Ohio. With period rhythm & blues, gospel and jazz music serving as a backdrop, Taylor performs a wide range of richly defined characters. The search becomes a bittersweet journey of self-discovery as well as a celebration of the rich cultural legacy of black radio.

BIOGRAPHY:
W. Allen Taylors theatre career began in 1979, and includes performances in many regional theatres around the country, as well as in NYC, with such critically acclaimed off-Broadway theatres as the Negro Ensemble Company and La Mama E.T.C.. He has also appeared on Broadway in August Wilsons Seven Guitars, and has had roles on network television and in feature films.
His solo show, "In Search Of My Father...Walkin' Talkin' Bill Hawkins", which he wrote and performed, made its professional debut at the Marsh Theatre in Berkeley, CA in 2006 and won the Best Solo-Performance Award from the San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle. The play was also nominated for an Audelco Award for Best Solo-Performance in NYC, 2008.
Allen received his MFA from the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco, and has served on the Bay Area theatre faculties of the East Bay Center for the Performing Arts, Laney College, and the College of Marin. He retired from COM in 2016 as a full-time professor and Drama department chair.
