Adventure in Pop Up with Callan and Costello
A weekend workshop that will feel like play as you master 3-D basics and beyond for eye-popping pop-up structures.

Join us on January 13th and 14th for a two-day adventure in pop-up with well-known BI book artists, Linda Costello and Susan Callan. Explore the use of patterns and perspective. Unfold the mysteries of mistakes without coming unglued. Discover intended, or unintended, stories that will leap out of your 3-D creations.

On Saturday, Susan will lead students through the logic, rules, and techniques of a dozen basic pop-up structures. The end result will be your own artful sampler and field journal- a reference book for your future use.

On Sunday, hold on to your hats! Linda raises the bar as she takes several of the basic structures, and teaches students to enhance them, combine them, and play with them (break the rules). You'll create three wildly imaginative structures- each housed in a handsome large-format folio, all to take home.

About Susan: As with many book artists, the discovery of the magical blend of books and art was a life-changing moment for Susan. That was twenty some years ago. She became a book arts sponge, absorbing every workshop and every book published on the subject, until the urge to share it all just took over. She has been teaching ever since, while, of course, continuing to be a sponge. A truly gratifying encore career!

About Linda: As an architect and historic preservation advocate, Linda Costello has spent much of her life planning and designing structures. Using substantial materials, like concrete, steel and wood,  is necessary to give an environment a sense of permanency.
As a paper engineer, Costello uses insubstantial materials. Forget permanence. It's paper! Learning through trial and error, she has had 25 commercial pop-up books published. She loves to show off her small collection of over 6,400 pop-up books.
As a pop-up book artist, Costello has discovered a way to go beyond a book's covers. She calls her books "unshelvables." Still learning by trial and error, she admits her most successful pop-ups have been mistakes.
